Question that inspired this post(posted on 23/11/2024):
I’ve recently obtained a long-term visa, but since applying, I’ve been exploring investment opportunities in France. We’re planning to set up a holding company and acquire our first business, a retail boutique. My question is: how straightforward is it to convert a long-term visa to a Talent/Investor visa while residing in France? We meet the requirements for the Talent/Investor visa, including sufficient funds for investment and the ability to guarantee employment for local people. The application would be submitted at the Nice Préfecture. My current visa is valid from February 2025 and hasn’t been activated yet. Given this, would it be better to cancel the current visa and submit a new application for the Talent/Investor visa in London instead? Has anyone experienced a similar situation, or can anyone offer advice? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Top Answers Hello, Both scenarios are possible, with their advantages and disadvantages. In the 1st case, you're already in France, but the processing time to change your status can be more or less lengthy. In the 2nd case, the response from the consulate may be quick, but depending on the duration of the visa, you may have to deal with the prefecture again.

Based on your situation, here's some advice on converting your long-term visa to a Talent Passport "Business investor" visa:
Options to Consider
Apply in France after arrival:
You can apply for a change of status within three months before your current visa expires.
This would be done through the dedicated online platform for Talent Passport applications
The advantage is that you can start your stay in France and prepare your investment while applying.
Cancel current visa and apply in London:
This might be the cleaner option, especially since your current visa hasn't been activated yet.
Applying at the French consulate in London for a Talent Passport visa could potentially be faster and more straightforward
Requirements for Talent Passport "Business Investor"
Ensure you meet these criteria:
Invest at least €300,000 in tangible or intangible assets.
Create or protect jobs within four years of the investment.
Invest either personally, via a company you control, or a company where you hold at least 30% of shares
Application Process
If applying from London:
Initiate the application on the France-visas website.
Submit the required documents to the French consulate.
Once in France, apply for the Talent Passport residence permit on the dedicated platform
Considerations
Processing time: The Talent Passport visa typically takes about 3 months to process
Validity: The Talent Passport is valid for up to 4 years and is renewable
Benefits: Includes spouse and children under 18, access to public education and healthcare
Recommendation
Given that your current visa hasn't been activated yet and you meet the investment criteria, cancelling your current visa and applying for the Talent Passport in London might be the most efficient option. This approach could save time and potentially avoid complications of changing status after arrival.
Remember to prepare a comprehensive business plan and gather all necessary documentation to support your investment plans when applying. If you decide to proceed with this option, contact the French consulate in London for specific guidance on cancelling your current visa and applying for the Talent Passport.
