Question that inspired this post:
I have lived in France with my V1 visa for almost 10 months, and I'm about to renew it. I have trouble buying health insurance because some local suppliers I consulted require my social security number which I don't have. They said it's a mandatory requirement. Does anyone have a recommendation for health insurance without a social security number?
Answers
"They don't understand what you want. They think you are already in the healthcare system and want to top up insurance."
"Were you not allowed to join PUMa, France's universal healthcare arrangements, via CPAM 3 months after you arrived in France?
The health insurance available generally in France, and needing your SocSec number, is likely to be top-up cover to bring the protection PUMa will give you up to 100% of your treatment costs.
The first step is to sign up for PUMa cover (call in at CPAM and ask for their form S1106), and then top it up if you wish, when you have the basic PUMa cover. "
"PUMa is short for Protection Universelle Maladie, and the word 'universelle' in this case means it is open to everyone who is legally a French resident. You need to apply to CPAM, using their form S1106. However, it's unlikely you'll be a member before your visa/TdS renewal, so you will need to continue with Private Health Insurance like you no doubt have already. The Préfecture will want to see that you have this insurance initially for the whole of your second year, so it's important to check with the insurer that when CPAM give you your PUMa membership - in maybe 6 months - you will be able to cancel the private insurance and not spend the whole year's premium. The type of Private Health Insurance you need is not available generally in France, because it is something most people buy before they arrive - as you will no doubt have done. So either try to renew the policy you have, or take out a replacement one using one of the specialist firms who can arrange this."
