How to Renew Your Carte de Séjour Temporaire (VLS-TS) with Your Current Passport

Dernière mise à jour : 3 juil. 2024

Question that inspired this post:

Carte de séjour temporaire (VLS-TS) expires 08/24

My current passport expires 03/25. I have two job offers at the moment- a CDD and a CDI both beginning at the end of August/ early September. I wanted to know if I could renew my documents based on my current passport. Or would I need to renew my passport beforehand?

(Also not sure if it's important but I will be changing regions as well)

"There is no provision for a minimum period of validity of the passport to obtain a Carte de séjour. However, the validity period of the Carte de séjour will be aligned with that of the passport if the validity period of the passport is less than one year. So I suggest renewing your passport first if you have time for it.

You can also find this information yourself by a simple Google search.

I hope this information is useful to you."

"I would go for the Carte de Sejour quickly. If it is expiring in August you need 2 months to apply! Your passport shouldn't be a problem..you still have a year to go on it...I've just received my second 10-year card which is now permanent and my passport was only 2 months old...so that's not your problem. But you do need to get that card renewed!"

Introduction

Renewing your carte de séjour temporaire (VLS-TS) is an essential process if you wish to continue residing in France. One critical aspect of this renewal is ensuring your passport is valid for at least three months beyond the expiration date of your new residence permit.

Given your current passport expires in March 2025, it should suffice for the renewal, as it will be valid for more than three months beyond the typical one-year validity of a renewed carte de séjour. Here’s a detailed guide to help you navigate the renewal process smoothly.

Key Steps and Considerations for Renewing Your Carte de Séjour

Renewal Process

  1. Timing: You must submit your renewal application between 2 to 4 months before the expiration of your current VLS-TS, which expires in August 2024. This means you should apply between April and June 2024.

  2. Required Documents: To renew your carte de séjour, you will need to provide several documents, including:

    1. A copy of your current VLS-TS.

    2. A copy of your passport (ensure it includes pages with your details, visa stamps, and any previous residence permits).

    3. Proof of employment (job offers or contracts for both CDD and CDI).

    4. Proof of residence in the new region you will be moving to.

    5. Recent ID photos.

    6. Any other documents specified by the prefecture.

  3. Submission: The application can typically be submitted online via the ANEF (Administration Numérique pour les Étrangers en France) portal. Ensure all documents are legible and translated into French if necessary.

  4. Changing Regions: Since you will be moving to a different region, you will need to apply to the prefecture of your new place of residence. Make sure to check the specific requirements and procedures of the new prefecture, as they can vary.

Considerations for Employment

  1. CDD (Contrat à Durée Déterminée): If you accept a CDD, you will need to provide the employment contract and any related documents to support your application for a temporary worker's residence permit.

  2. CDI (Contrat à Durée Indéterminée): For a CDI, you will need to provide the permanent employment contract and apply for a "carte de séjour salarié" which is renewable annually.

Passport Validity

Your current passport, expiring in March 2025, should be valid for the renewal process as it extends beyond the typical one-year validity of the renewed carte de séjour. However, it is always advisable to check with the prefecture if there are any specific requirements or if they recommend renewing your passport to avoid any potential issues.

Additional Tips

  1. Stay Informed: Regularly check the ANEF portal and the website of the prefecture for updates on your application status and any additional requirements.

  2. Documentation: Ensure all your documents are up-to-date and correctly formatted. If any documents are missing, upload a PDF explaining the situation and when the missing documents will be available.

By following these steps and ensuring your passport's validity, you should be able to renew your carte de séjour without needing to renew your passport immediately.

Additional Key Points for Renewing Your Carte de Séjour Temporaire (VLS-TS)

In your situation, there are a few key points to consider regarding your ability to renew your carte de séjour temporaire (VLS-TS) and start your new job with your current passport:

  1. Renewal of Carte de Séjour Temporaire (VLS-TS)

    1. Since your VLS-TS is expiring in August 2024, you will need to renew it. The renewal process can be started two months before the expiration date, which would be in June 2024. As your passport is valid until March 2025, you should be able to use your current passport for this renewal.

    2. Generally, for most administrative processes, including the renewal of a residence permit in France, it is required that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the expiration date of the requested permit. Given that your passport expires in March 2025 and your carte de séjour temporaire expires in August 2024, you are within the acceptable range for renewal as long as your permit does not extend beyond your passport's expiration.

    3. If you are changing regions, you will need to inform the prefecture in your new region. It’s essential to provide your new address and, if applicable, your new employment details.

    4. Both types of employment contracts (CDD and CDI) can support your renewal application. However, a CDI might be more favourable in demonstrating stability, which can be beneficial for your case.

Recommendations

  1. Renew Your Passport Early: While you technically have enough validity on your passport to process the renewal of your carte de séjour temporaire, it might be prudent to renew your passport earlier than March 2025 to avoid any complications or delays in future administrative processes. A new passport would provide a longer validity period and reduce the need for frequent updates with the French authorities.

  2. Prepare Your Documentation: Gather all necessary documents for your renewal application, including proof of your new employment, address in the new region, and any other required documentation.

  3. Consult the Prefecture: Contact the prefecture in your current and new region to confirm specific requirements and ensure you have all the necessary information and documents.

Action Plan

  1. Start Renewal Process: Initiate the renewal process for your carte de séjour temporaire as early as June 2024.

  2. Gather Employment Documents: Obtain your job offer letters and employment contracts for submission.

  3. Inform the Prefecture: Notify the prefecture about your move and new employment.

By following these steps, you should be able to manage the renewal of your residence permit and transition to your new job smoothly.
