Navigating Emergency Travel to France as a Foreigner

04/06/2024

The question that inspired this post:

Hello All,

A friend of mine is in the hospital. He is in his last stage and the doctor told him that only a few hours to a few days left him. I am planning to bring his mother here who is in India. I need to give attention d’accueil. But it is a long process. We don’t have that much time. Can you tell me is there any other possible way?

Please comment on this,

It’s URGENT

Answer

"No, I don’t think so there is any solution because we were in the same situation and we sent our friend back to India in business class to meet his family. You can send him back to India with family or someone. Rest depends on God"

"Submit doctors papers to the French embassy in India for visa. There is a helpline for emergencies. They will help."

Introduction

No one wants to be in a situation where a loved one's serious illness or imminent passing requires dropping everything to travel internationally on short notice. But these heartbreaking circumstances do occur. If you find yourself needing to urgently travel from India to France to be with a critically ill friend or family member, there are a few potential pathways to explore:

The Emergency Travel Visa

In cases of grave illness, injury or death involving a close family member, the French consulates in India can potentially issue emergency travel visas. This involves directly contacting the nearest French embassy or consulate immediately, explaining the critical situation, and providing documentation like:

  • Medical records/details of the ill person's condition

  • Proof of your relationship to the ill person

  • Travel itinerary and arrangements

The consular officers evaluate these requests on a case-by-case basis. Having all documentation in order and emphasizing the urgency of the situation is crucial. If approved, they can expedite the processing of an emergency temporary visa.

The Temporary Attendance Permit

Another option is to request a "visa de courte durée" or temporary attendance permit through the French consulate. This short-term visa is specifically for exceptional circumstances like this one. Your required documents would include:

  • Details of the medical emergency

  • Proof of arrangements for a short stay in France

  • Commitment to return to India after the situation is resolved

While still requiring standard visa processing, this may allow faster approval for travelling to France temporarily during this difficult time.

Seeking Airline Assistance

If you are a French citizen, you could also try reaching out directly to airlines like Air France. Explain the situation in full and see if they can coordinate with authorities to allow your loved one to travel quickly on an emergency basis, even without their visa being fully processed yet.

The airline may be able to facilitate some documentation upon arrival. No matter which avenue you pursue, urgent action is key. Gather every piece of documentation, make contact with all relevant authorities, and convey the grave nature of the circumstances. Having a French citizen co-sign requests can also help bolster the case.

My heart goes out to anyone facing such an emotionally wrenching situation where a loved one's life is at stake. I hope one of these emergency travel options enables your family member to make the journey in time. Persistence and clearly explaining the urgency of your need is crucial.
