Navigating Prefecture Assignments for Student Visa Renewals: Understanding Processing Delays After Relocating to Paris

07/11/2024

Question that inspired this post(posted on 07/11/2024):

I was previously assigned to the Raincy prefecture (93) and have now moved to Paris where I applied for the renewal of my student visa. It has been 2 months and the visa hasn’t been processed as yet and I am confused about which prefecture to reach out to.

How does the application get allocated to a prefecture? Does my recent renewal application first go to my old Raincy prefecture and they reassign it to the Police de prefecture or was it automatically sent to Police de prefecture after I filled in my address on the ANEF portal?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's what you need to know about your student visa renewal application:

  1. Prefecture allocation: When you apply for a renewal through the ANEF (Administration Numérique pour les Étrangers en France) portal, your application is automatically assigned to the prefecture responsible for your current address.

  2. Current Prefecture: Since you've moved to Paris, your application should have been automatically assigned to the Préfecture de Police de Paris, which handles immigration matters for residents of Paris.

  3. Processing time: The processing time for visa renewals can vary, and two months is not uncommon. However, you should have received some form of acknowledgement after submitting your application.

  4. Documentation received: After submitting your application, you should have received

    1. A confirmation of deposit via email (confirmation de dépôt)

    2. A certificate of extension of instruction (attestation de prolongation d'instruction or ADP) a few weeks after submission

  5. Contacting the prefecture: If you need to contact the prefecture about your application, you should reach out to the Préfecture de Police de Paris, not your former prefecture in Raincy.

  6. Checking application status: You can check the status of your application on your ANEF account.

  7. Validity of current documents: If your previous residence permit has expired, the ADP, together with your expired permit, should serve as proof of your legal status while your renewal is being processed.

To resolve your confusion:

  1. Log into your ANEF account to check the status of your application and ensure all documents are correctly uploaded.

  2. If you haven't received a confirmation of deposit or an ADP, contact the Préfecture de Police de Paris through their official channels.

  3. Ensure that your current Paris address is correctly listed on your ANEF account.

Remember, it's crucial to keep all documentation related to your application, including any confirmations or certificates received through the ANEF portal.

If you need to follow up on your application, always refer to the Préfecture de Police de Paris, as they are now responsible for processing your renewal.
