Question that inspired this post(posted on 14/10/2024):
I have a question about student work hours. Students are allowed to work 964 hours in a year. I'm confused about whether these hours start from my visa date or if they go from January to December. Or what happens if you work more than 964 hours
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me clarify the rules regarding the 964-hour work limit for students:
Calculation period: The 964-hour limit is calculated on a sliding-year basis, starting from the date your residence permit becomes valid. It does not follow the calendar year (January to December).
Starting point: The count begins from the start date of your student residence permit or visa, not from January 1st
Exceeding the limit: Working more than 964 hours per year is generally not allowed and can have serious consequences:
It may lead to your residence permit being withdrawn
If your studies require you to work more than 964 hours, your employer must request a temporary work permit from the French authorities
Exceptions: Some activities don't count towards the 964-hour limit:
Internships that are part of your curriculum and covered by a tripartite agreement
Certain work-study programs or professional training contracts, especially for master's students
Monitoring: It's your responsibility to keep track of your working hours. Your employer should also be aware of these limitations.
Consequences: Violating these rules can jeopardize your legal status in France and future visa applications.
Remember, the primary purpose of your stay in France is to study. The work allowance is intended to help you support yourself financially during your studies, not to be a full-time employee. Always prioritize your studies and adhere to the work hour limitations to maintain your student status.
