Visiting a Dentist in France Without a Social Security Number: What You Need to Know

29/10/2024

Question that inspired this post(posted on 29/10/2024):

Hey, I need your help! One of my dental crowns came out. I’m in the process of getting a numéro de sécurité sociale, but don’t have it yet. Can I still visit a dentist and if so, how much is this going to cost?

"You can go to see any dentist/doctor and pay upfront... you keep your invoice and send it by post to cpam when you have your social security number (you don't need the carte to be reimbursed just the number)

For your specific case, if you have a mutuelle from work it is better as secu don't cover the extra dentist cost (make a copy of the invoices to send them also to your mutuelle by post... don't forget to send also your social id number to your mutuelle through your HR... until the mutuelle is not linked to you social security account you have to send the invoice separately - you can check if they are both linked on your ameli account... ) this way you are sure to have the full coverage even if you don't have yet the carte

If you don't have a mutuelle, look for Centre de sante dentaire or centre called dentego or dentylis or dentist conventionné in secteur 1... they are the ones with the lowest price... any dentist will have to give you a quote which includes the coverage of secu and the extra which can be covered by a mutuelle... so there is no surprise... if you still have the crown it should not be expensive..."

Here are the key points about visiting a dentist in France without a social security number:

  1. You can still visit a dentist without a social security number, but you'll have to pay the full cost upfront

  2. Without social security coverage, dentists can charge "honoraires libres" (unrestricted fees), meaning there's no limit to what they can charge

  3. The cost will depend on the specific treatment needed, but here are some general price ranges:

    • A standard consultation costs around €23-30

    • Replacing a crown typically costs between €500-1000

  4. To find a dentist, you can:

    • Use online directories like Doctolib or PagesJaunes

    • Ask for recommendations from locals or expat groups

    • Check with your local pharmacy for suggestions

  5. When you get your appointment, explain your situation regarding the lack of social security coverage. Some dentists may offer a reduced rate.

  6. Once you receive your social security number, you can submit the receipts for potential partial reimbursement

  7. For future reference, dental care in France is typically reimbursed at 70% of official rates by the state system, with additional coverage possible through complementary insurance (mutuelle)

Remember, prices can vary significantly between dentists, especially for more complex procedures like crown replacement. It's advisable to get quotes from a few dentists if possible.
